XPeng Motors, a Chinese new energy vehicle brand, held its seventh XPeng Technology Day event on November 5th, where it showed off its latest iteration of the IRON humanoid robot. One of the highlights of the event was the robot walking onto the stage using smooth, almost cat-like movements that caught those in attendance off guard.
Clips shot during the live runway show later went viral on social media, leaving most viewers amazed by the robot’s realistic gait. Some even speculated that behind the mesh exterior of the humanoid robot was an actual person doing the walking. At some point, the speculation got so bad that He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPeng Motors, posted a clip of his team cutting open the limb of an IRON robot to prove that there was no one hiding inside.
“There are always people who don’t believe that the world is changing so fast,” He said. “This morning (6th), they forced me to film a one-shot, unedited video to respond to this question. I hope everyone can distinguish between truth and falsehood and help us clarify this.”
In the video, Xpeng Motors staff use scissors to cut open the white “skin” covering the robot’s left calf and the inner elastic “muscle” fibers, revealing the metal skeleton inside. The robot then walks off the stage to the enthusiastic cheers and applause of the crowd.
“We hope this is the last time we have to prove that the IRON robot is truly itself. We hope that after tonight, more people will believe that a robot capable of walking like a cat was made by a Chinese company, He Xiaopeng wrote on his Weibo account.
Xpeng isn’t the first company to leave people stunned by the smooth movements of its robot. Earlier this year, Chinese robotics startup Engine AI also showed off a humanoid robot capable of impressively smooth movements.
